Comments and parts of critics of orchestral works

About the first orchestral works :
Divertimento for String Orchestra op.3 and Norwegian Ouverture op.7 These early works were received with delight by the audience .

Divertimento op.3
which was composed by the 22 years old Kvandal, combine an almost virtuos orchestral treatment with a flow of musical vitality.

Norwegian Ouverture op .7
presents a gentle melodic theme in folklore character , and the music paints a picture of Norwegian nature .
There is also the lonesome shepherd boy playing on his flute .

Variations and Fugue op 14
begins with a gentle folklore melody continuing into a well established orchestral development, which leads into an eminent polyphon Double Fugue as a conclusion .

Symphony nr 1 , op. 18 "
is distinguished by musical and rythmical drive and tension through the first movement and leading into the lyric and melodic theme of the second movement . The third movement presents a humorous Rondo theme , alternating with groups of elegant wind solis and a whirling rythm .At the end of the symphony the music in an astonishing way turns back to the first theme of the beginning of the composition "(Part of reviewReimar Riefling VG,Oslo)
Well known musician and reviewer Sten Frykberg ,Gøteborg Trade-Newspaper: "An interesting new piece of music .Not in a long time we have experienced such a playing engagement with such an imaginative treatment of the Orchestra in a Scandinavian musical work. Kvandal is working with classical orchestra technic, were the concertante is prevailing striking. His style, not free of Eastern-European ideas,is balancing between new and old .... and conductor Carl von Garaguly was captivated by the musical features and traits in the symphony, and it was just this the audience was thrilled by.

In Symphonic Epos op . 21
the listener should imagine a struggle between two parts , perhaps taking place in the time of the old norse sage . " The hero ,who intends to lead the people through a dramatic situation and save them , fights , but in a tragic way looses .Then follows the musical describing of the sorrow of the people. In spite of the composition having only one movement,it has all the traits of a symphonic form , with three main themes , that are treated through this dramatic epos .(Part of review , Bergen )

Sinfonia consertante op. 29
"combines a vigourus ,musical phantasy with a masterly technical skill , the different groups of instruments having their clear position in the musical development , which at the end of the Sinfonia leads into a formidable cadenza."(Part of review . Bergen 30.10.1993 )

Antagonia op.38
is regarded as one of the very best contemporary orchestral Norwegian works in general. Two orchestras/percussion are playing against each other. There are explosive themes and blochs of sound in the first movement . The second movement has a suggestive and peaceful character. The third movement presents a vital and lively finale .(Part of Review 3.5.1993 , Arvika Nyheter) .

Wellknown rewier Harald Herresthal Oslo:
Antagonia has Qualities that are attracting both musicians and audience. It has become a quite personal and indipendent music. There is rythmical drive and elasticity and an international audience would enjoy it, when the orchestra would work with it in the same way as when they are playing the great masterpieces of the world.

Triptychon op53
One of the most often performed orchestral works ,very well received at the Edinburgh Festival , where it was performed by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1989 . "It is rich in ideas and is extremely well written and orchestrated . This enabled the ensemble to show, what it was worth , and to capture the attention of the audience ."(Part of review)

Concerto for Chamber Orchestra op.55 (1980)
An entertaining and humourus piece of music

Works for solo instrument with orchestra
Concerto for Flute and Strings op. 22 (1963), 14'30''
Flute solo, str
NMO
The work is written in close collaboration with the flutist Per Øien. The opening capriccio has a clearly defined rythmic statement, which plays an important role in the movements intense coda. The exposition of the main theme ends with an inverted variant. The next three movements are played without a pause. In the second of these there is an aria, where Kvandal gives free rein to his imagination in a movement comprising a long melody, culminating in a passionate climax. As in the first movement there comes a cadenza and at last a rondo, which closes with a brilliant coda. (Morten Gaathaug. Trans, Sandra Hamilton).
Kvandals konsert er et fint verk, vel avbalansert og ypperlig skrevet for besetningen. En usedvanlig vakker langsom sats blir innfattet av to velskrevne yttersatser, og kadensen er fint formet.

Concerto for Oboe and String Orchestra op. 46

NMO

...The concerto reveals a magnetizing musical fluency, and has a condensed middle movement with elements of folk music.
Carl Gunnar Åhlên, Svenska Dagbladet, Stockholm 14.6.1977.

There is no superabundance of oboe concertos. So when the Norwegian composer Johan Kvandal presented a concerto for oboe and string orchestra in 1977, it was welcomed by oboists with delight. Splendidly suited to the instrument, it is, with its form of modern tonality and rythmic vitality, a piece that will appeal to an audience who normally shrinks from distinctlymodern music.
Hans Voigt, Berlingske Tidende, Copenhagen, 24.7.1980

Concerto for Violin and and Orchestra op.52
(1979), 30` 2(1)-2-2-2 4-3-3-1 timp, perc, cel, str. NMO
Johan Kvandals Violin Concerto is such a monumental composition that I shouldn't be surprised if were the best Norwegian work in this genre. The solo part is extremely well suited to the violin, with a real sense of flow through all three movements. The concerto opens with "Norwegian rythms", contrasted by a lyrical second theme. The lovely, long second movement unfolds characteristically without bravura, and has an expressive cadenza. The finale is characterized by a lighter, elegant rythm .
Reimar Riefling, Verdens Gang 18.8. 1979.

The structures of the concerto are both plain and enigmatic. The tension follows through the whole composition and contributes to a musical journey that is both stimulating and surprising.

....After a heavy, melancoly opening in which major and minor take turns leading the way, there is a bild up of tension with dramatic climaxes, which is not resolved until the finale with its bright major chords. ....This is an important work of our time. It was given its first performance in Bergen in 1976. It is an extremely captivating work by a composer who has ties to traditional music at the same time as he is an innovator. He has taken the consequenses of the fact that there has to be coherence in culture. We do not begin anew with each generation. This conviction does not, however, prevent him from using his imagination, his knowledge and his abilities in a musical language that in many respects reflects our own time. His Flute Quartet is convincing, magnetizing evidence of this. (Thoralf Nordheim, Aftenposten, 26.4.1979.)
